Indiana-Kentucky trip part vier
Fourth stop: The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary & Southeast Christian Church, Louisville, KY
We only had time for a very short visit at the seminary, so I only got to three places, the coffeehouse, the bookstore, and the tailor shop. Yeah, the tailor shop, nicknamed “Edgar’s”, after fourth president, Edgar Young Mullins. This is where a good Baptist student can get their suit, tie, and dress shirt. The bookstore was ordinary, except for the C.H. Spurgeon and Al Mohler bobble heads. They also carry Luther and Calvin, but they were out of stock. I guess I was predestined to not own one.
Southeast
- Five year transition, training new Senior Pastor.
- Lost 2,000 during transition.
- Most elders transitioned out the last two years of transition.
- 70% of attendees come from someone inviting them.
- Original strategy was Southeast is light to the city for people to come to. Dave Stone envisioned more of a going out into the community strategy.
- Local missions get almost as much budget as foreign missions.
- Took about a year and a half for someone to go from first visit to joining church or being saved. They now have several avenues to be assimilated.
- High school services are on Sunday nights. They serve somewhere on Sunday mornings.
