Third stop: Southland Christian Church, Lexington, KY.
- Church of over 9000
- Traditional stain glass, shirt and tie, hymns, etc. for 30 years under Wayne Smith. Called Mike Breaux as new pastor and he covered the stain glass and switch to a worship band. Lost 400 regulars and gained 2000 new attenders.
- Breaux tried all kinds of different things, “flavor of the month.”
- Jon Weece, teaching pastor became senior pastor in 2003, and after 8 months of prayer leadership introduced:
- Seek- worship, baptism, etc.
- Study- discipleship, Sunday school, Bible study.
- Serve- outreach.
- 8 months ago they reorganized under the simply idea of ‘make Jesus famous’.
- With Jesus, in community, on a mission.
- God always has a next step.
- They use Bible studies to launch their small groups.
- Pastors should be more transparent than any other person in the church.
- They have redefined “programs” as “vehicles”.
