Indiana-Kentucky trip part deux

October 28th 2009 in All, School

Second stop: First Church of Burlington, Burlington, Kentucky.

  • 2229 in attendance
  • Like Kingsway, also in transition with new Senior Pastor on staff already.  They joke that they taught Kingsway how to do it.
  • Acknowledge their lackluster website.  New one is the works.
  • Always encouraging attendees to take the next step.  First step is guest services.
  • Their fours values are:
  1. Worship
  2. Study
  3. Serve
  4. Give
  • They have guests instead of visitors.
  • Volunteers make a 1 yr commitment.
  • The bulletin has a tear-off with basic info to fill out and also a place to list unchurched, any prayer requests, and upcoming surgeries.  They get a 90% return of the tear-offs.  Mainly because they pray for the needs every week and then the staff, administration, and elders do follow-up.
  • They redefined Christian education as spiritual formation.
  • What does God want from those at First Church, not what we want for them.
  • Why are we on this corner in Burlington, KY?
  • Recruit 7 people to be praying for you.

Books

  1. Creating Magic by Lee Cockerell
  2. First Impressions by Mark L. Waltz
  3. Simply strategic volunteers by Tony Morgan and Tim Stevens
  4. Think orange by Reggie Joiner
  5. Being God’s man in leading a family by Stephen Arterburn, Kenny Luck, and Todd Wendorff
